‘These fragments…’

Version 2Hello! I’m a teacher, researcher and writer based in Edinburgh. Luckily, I enjoy teaching, researching and writing (and living in Edinburgh), and also love to get out and talk with a wider audience about anything of mutual interest. This site brings together, in one easily accessible place (for me, at least), information on the growing range of projects, activities and publications that I’m busy with in my professional life.

In recent years, more and more of the most enjoyable work I’ve done has happened or ended up online, and there are now traces of all this activity scattered about the web in loads of different and entirely separate places. As it would be a shame, from my point of view, to have these all drift off in various directions as the volume of material and range of environments online continue to increase, it seemed a good idea to try and bring them all together somewhere other than my cv.

And while I’m not keen to spraff away in public about all sorts all the time, I do like to write the occasional blogpost about the things that interest me, drawing – sometimes pretty tenuously, I admit – on the kinds of areas I’ve focused on in my teaching or research . Any such posts can be found under Certain Observations. If anything on the site tickles your fancy or gets your goat in some way or another, please get in touch – I’d love to hear from you. My contact details are at the bottom of the page, beneath this lovely picture of the Tweed valley in high summer.

The line that gives me the title of this page – as plenty will know – is from T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, and reads in full “These fragments I have shored against my ruins.” As if!
